O'Hare International Airport Begins Work On International Terminal 5 Departures Level Roadway

Chicago- July 24, 2002 B Construction work on O'Hare Airport's International Terminal 5 departures level roadway begins August 1st and continues to November 2002, Aviation Officials announced today.

The Terminal 5 Upper Level Roadway Improvement Project is part of the Department of Aviation's on-going capital improvement program to improve the existing roadway infrastructure of the airport facility.

"The roadway project is necessary to enhance the structure's integrity," said Aviation Commissioner Thomas R. Walker. "This will be the first major improvement to the Terminal 5 roadway since it first opened in 1993."

The project consists of replacing the current surface with a concrete overlay of the upper level roadway. The project will also rebuild the upper level roadway sidewalks, replace the upper level roadway expansion joints, and improve lower level lighting on the underside of the upper level roadway.

The Department's goal is to minimize motorist and passenger inconvenience. Construction work will take place during nighttime hours between 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., when airport operations are minimally impacted.

Variable message signs will be placed at major entry points into the airport at I-190 at Bessie Coleman Drive; I-190 westbound exit to Bessie Coleman Drive; I-190 eastbound exit to Bessie Coleman Drive and the entrance road into International Terminal 5.

Information flyers will be distributed at all Airport Information Booths and to all taxi, limousine and commercial vehicles traveling to and from O'Hare. Travelers can also contact Airport Information at (773) 686-2200.

Travelers should allow additional time if departing from Terminal 5. Motorists and airport users are advised to proceed directly to International Parking Lot D between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. instead of dropping off passengers at the upper level roadway. Lot D is conveniently located directly across from International Terminal 5. Unattended vehicles on the roadway will be ticketed and towed.
